Confused by disk failure, degraded mode

Confused by disk failure, degraded mode I have a backup target NAS in my basement that is coming to live once a week to sync with another QNAP NAS in the office. This is a TS-495U with 4x2TB, the firmware is 3.8.2. A few weeks ago one of the disks failed and this remained unnoticed until last weekend when a firmware update failed.
