[TS-109] How is the root filesystem parsed to kernel?

How is the root filesystem parsed to kernel? I recently upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze - all went smoothly without any problems. At that occasion I was asked whether I want to convert to new dependency based (insserv) start: I said yes. Also when asked to covert from device names to UUID's I answered yes.
